Connie Chiume, renowned for her role in Black Panther, passed away at the age of 72, as confirmed by her family.
The acclaimed South African actress, who had a highly successful career, died in a hospital in Johannesburg on Tuesday afternoon.
Chiume’s son, Nongelo, informed Newsroom Afrika that his mother had undergone a medical procedure before her passing.
Chiume was a lead actress in many South African TV shows, including Rhythm City, Zone 14, and Gomora.
She portrayed Zawavari, a member of the Wakandan Tribal Council, in the 2018 blockbuster movie Black Panther.
In the sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, her character was elevated to the Elder Statesman of Wakanda.
The family has requested privacy during this difficult time and will provide more details later on.
In a 2022 interview on the MacG Podcast, Chiume expressed her wishes for how she wanted to be remembered.
“I have touched each and every person in a different way,” she said. “No matter how I’ve affected you, remember me that way.”
Fans have flooded social media with tributes and messages of grief over her passing.
The South African government also extended their condolences on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and coworkers of the legendary and multi-award-winning actress Connie Chiume.”
“Her outstanding work will always be remembered.”
Chiume was born in Welkom, in the Free State province. She had a mixed heritage with a Malawian father and a Zulu mother.
She originally trained to be a nurse, then switched to teaching before finding her true calling as a celebrated actress.
She is survived by two sons and two daughters, who will deeply miss her.
