In New Zealand, the choice of the main bird of the year is very reverent and scrupulous. In terms of scale and significance, this event is in no way inferior to the presidential elections.
The fact is that New Zealanders are very proud of the diversity of fauna in their country. It often hosts various competitions for animals to draw public attention to the problem of their extinction. This year, most people voted for a very unusual parrot.
The winning bird belongs to the kakapo species. Today, its number is just over two hundred individuals. These parrots went through a rather long evolutionary process, during which they stopped flying and were awake during the day. During daylight hours, they prefer to hide in hollows or foliage, pretending to be part of them.
Surprisingly, this bird is the largest parrot in the world. But people voted for her not only for this reason. It has another unique difference – an incredible smell. People who are lucky enough to see unusual parrots claim that they smell like wood resin. Others claim that parrots are fragrant with perfume with musky notes.
Due to their special coloration, birds can deceive predators by pretending that they are parts of trees or bushes. There is an assumption that earlier they could even defend themselves from an attack. But over time, this ability was lost. Therefore, today these parrots can only be saved with the help of disguise. It allows them to avoid becoming someone’s dinner.
