At the bubblegum-filled Glastonbury Festival in 2024, pop-punk headliner Avril Lavigne resurrected her 2002 hit “Sk8er Boi” to a sold-out crowd of 70,000 at The Other Stage.
At her Glastonbury debut, Avril performed a setlist consisting of twelve of her most popular songs. The set began with 2007’s #1 hit “Girlfriend,” and the performance progressed through ballads like “Complicated” and “My Happy Ending.” The crowd went wild during “Sk8ter Boi,” singing along with the lyrics and yelling out the iconic guitar riff.
On her pink-splattered stage, Avril Lavigne—who, according to conspiracy theorists, may or may not have been replaced by a lookalike in 2003—sported an outfit straight out of the Y2K era: a tartan miniskirt embellished with buckles, straps, and chains; a wrinkled Union Flag affixed to the back of her cropped black jacket; fishnet tights, torn over-the-knee socks, and flat, knee-high platform boots.
Due to the enormous turnout for Avril’s Glasto performance, festival-goers were unable to join in on the chaos after the audience at The Other Stage overflowed into the campsite. It was said that the festival organizers failed to anticipate the increasing demand for nostalgia-driven performances and instead gave the main stage to younger musicians. Overcrowding was also a problem during Sugababes, which led to the closure of the West Holts stage and complaints of fainting among spectators.
